CABLE, Wis. (WJMC) — Get ready for America’s largest cross country ski race, with a chance to ski the trails, or a special night race under the stars.
Saturday, Jan. 25, the American Birkebeiner Ski Foundation will host the Birkie Tour at the trail head in Cable. After a cancelled race, due to lack of snow in Marquette, Michigan, and a reprieve from the subzero temperatures earlier in the week, they expect an influx of skiers, with an opportunity to utilize the Birkie trail, in preparation for Birkie events in February.
“Come out. Ski. Be supported with aid stations and the like. Get some cool swag, get a meal, get a beer, get a pop after the event. It’s all part of the experience,” explained Executive Director Ben Popp.
“Come on out to Mt. Telemark Village, and you can ski, if you want to ski 5k, you want to ski 50k. It’s really going to be up to you. It’s going to be a variety of courses. If you want to adventure south a little bit, you can go to Timber Trail or Fire Tower. You can easily ski 50 kilometers down to Double O and back. And then at night, under the lights, you gotta have a headlamp, there’s a 10k race that you can do by yourself, or a 20k, you actually partner up, and then you ski it together.”
Registration will close on Friday. For a complete schedule and information go online, www.birkie.com.
