LADYSMITH, Wis. (WJMC) — A case of mumps has been confirmed in Rusk County.
No information was given on the patient.
The county health department says the contagious disease is spread through the air when a person talks, coughs, sneezes or shares cups or dishes. Early symptoms include fever, head and body aches, fatigue, and in a few days, swelling in the glands around your mouth.
If you have been in contact with someone with mumps, contact your doctor, especially if you are at high health risk, such as infants under one year old or pregnant women.
Rusk County Public Health said the best prevention for mumps is the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine, before one is exposed. Contact your healthcare provider or local health department for the MMR vaccine if you need the vaccine for yourself or your children.
