On this day in US history, the Continental Congress voted to appoint George Washington to command the colonies’ first official army on June 15, 1775. He had been managing his family’s plantation when Congress unanimously voted him to lead the revolutionary army. He would officially take command on July 3rd. After six years of struggle with a poorly trained militia, Washington managed to lead the army to force Great Britain to surrender in 1781.
