On this day in US history, the first roller coaster to ever open in the country was built at Coney Island, in Brooklyn, New York, on June 16, 1884. Known in other terms as a switchback railway, it traveled at about six miles per hour. Costing about a nickel to ride, the new entertainment was an instant success. By the 1900s, there were hundreds of roller coasters across the US.
