On this day in US history, Robert E. Lee surrendered his 28,000 Confederate soldiers to Union General Ulysses S. Grant on April 9, 1865. After being forced to abandon the Confederate capital of Richmond, Virginia, and being blocked from joining forces in North Carolina, Lee surrendered his troops, which effectively ended the Civil War.
